Household income sources
Employment was the most broadly reported income source in the supplied 2024 ACS measures. There were 271,557 Washington, DC households with earnings, including 265,813 households with wage or salary income and 36,732 with self-employment income.

The public-program measures included 15,101 households with Supplemental Security Income and 16,372 with public assistance income. A separate measure counted 55,489 households with cash public assistance or Food Stamps/SNAP. These categories should not be added together as though they were mutually exclusive: a household can have more than one income source, and the table definitions differ.
The source counts are reported in the 2024 ACS B19051 earnings table, B19052 wage or salary income table, B19053 self-employment income table, B19054 interest, dividends, or net rental income table, B19055 Social Security income table, B19056 Supplemental Security Income table, B19057 public assistance income table, B19058 public assistance income or Food Stamps/SNAP table, B19059 retirement income table, and B19060 other types of income table.

How to read these statistics
The figures above are 2024 ACS estimates for Washington, DC. “Median” describes the midpoint of a distribution, while “aggregate” describes a combined total. Income brackets count households in ranges, and the $200,000-or-more bracket has no upper limit. Age categories identify the age of the householder, not necessarily the age of every person in the household.
Income-source counts are measures of households reporting each source and may overlap. Race and ethnicity categories also require the table definitions above, particularly where Hispanic or Latino ethnicity is shown alongside race categories. Keeping those scopes explicit makes the 2024 estimates useful for comparing household-income patterns without treating unlike measures as interchangeable.
