Recent event volume and attendance

Events DC and the Washington Convention and Sports Authority report the following Walter E. Washington Convention Center totals. Fiscal years end September 30 unless an event date is stated.

Fiscal yearEventsAttendees
FY202124118,119
FY202295439,219
FY2023117702,110
FY2024114677,915
FY2025114781,951

The five-year series shows a sharp difference between FY2021 and the later reporting years. The Convention Center hosted 24 events with 118,119 attendees in FY2021, followed by 95 events and 439,219 attendees in FY2022. Activity then reached 117 events and 702,110 attendees in FY2023. 2024/25–Senior Lien Dedicated Tax, Rfdg 2021A WCSA

In FY2024, the venue hosted 114 events with 677,915 attendees. FY2025 also had 114 events, but attendance was reported at 781,951. Events DC’s FY2025 audit report separately lists 114 Convention Center events and $28.1 million in Conventions and Meetings Division revenue. Audit Report FY2025

The FY2024 event count was three lower than FY2023, according to Events DC’s comparison. The WCSA reporting also says that six public ticketed events and one citywide event that did not return in FY2023 represented an estimated combined attendance loss of approximately 251,000. That estimate describes the missing events, not a measured attendance total for the Convention Center’s remaining program. 2024/25–Senior Lien Dedicated Tax, Rfdg 2021A WCSA

Pandemic-era reporting needs particular care. During the first two quarters of FY2021, when restrictions were in effect, the Convention Center recorded 32 events and 185,004 total attendees. That partial-period figure is reported separately from the 24-event FY2021 total, so it should not be treated as a comparable full-year measure. Attendance definitions can also vary: sponsor figures may be restated after registration review, and the top-ten reporting distinguishes organizer estimates, ticketed-event estimates, audited official attendance, and unique multi-day registrants.

Largest named events

The WCSA top-ten information identifies a varied set of high-attendance Washington, DC events. The Washington Auto Show recorded 200,000 attendees from January 21–29, 2023, the highest attendance listed for fiscal years 2021–2025. Awesome Con DC recorded 47,932 attendees from March 8–10, 2024, while Otakon 2024 recorded 45,000 attendees from August 1–3, 2024.

The 2023 Capitol Hill Classic Volleyball Tournament recorded 37,616 attendees from February 18–20, 2023. These event-level figures are not all measured using the same attendance definition, so they are best read as reported event totals rather than a uniform audited ranking. 2024/25–Senior Lien Dedicated Tax, Rfdg 2021A WCSA

Convention Center size and meeting capacity

The Walter E. Washington Convention Center has 2.3 million square feet of total facility space, including 703,000 square feet of exhibit space, 52,000 square feet of ballroom space, and 198,000 square feet of flexible meeting space. The facility has 77 meeting rooms. These are current facility specifications, not a forecast of attendance for any particular event. Fact Sheet and Ultimate Events DC Planning Guide

Events DC lists room-set capacities for the exhibit halls in several configurations. For theater seating, Hall A is listed at 8,258 people, Hall C at 7,466, Hall D at 7,000, and Hall E at 6,000. Hall B is reproduced exactly as listed by Events DC at 811,982 people; because this figure is unusual relative to the surrounding specifications, readers should consult the Exhibitor Services page for the current venue listing.

Classroom seating is listed at 5,750 people in Hall A, 6,860 in Hall B, 3,800 in Hall C, 4,340 in Hall D, and 2,800 in Hall E. Banquet seating is listed at 4,416 people in Hall A, 7,120 in Hall B, 4,176 in Hall C, 3,720 in Hall D, and 2,040 in Hall E. These are room-set specifications, and changing the layout changes the usable capacity.

Economic impact and hotel-room demand

Historical Events DC reporting shows how convention activity has been connected to hotel demand and local spending. In FY2009, out-of-town Convention Center attendees generated 280,478 hotel room nights. The venue hosted 10 citywide conventions and 194 other meetings, tradeshows, expositions, and smaller events that year. Convention Center activity generated approximately $333 million in economic activity, and total attendance exceeded 1 million visitors. 2009 Annual Report

An economic-impact study estimated $1.6 billion in Convention Center spending between 2005 and 2008 and more than 17,000 jobs created during that period. Those are historical study estimates, not current forecasts. 2008 Annual Report

In FY2012, the Convention Center hosted 12 citywide meetings and 196 other events. Convention Center activity generated an estimated $350.7 million in direct delegate spending that fiscal year. The estimate concerns direct delegate spending, which is a narrower measure than total economic activity. 2013 Annual Report

A decade of activity and spending

Through FY2013, the Convention Center’s first 10 years of operation were associated with more than $3.683 billion in total direct delegate spending. In FY2013, Events DC venues drew 1.79 million people to 382 events. That 1.79-million-person and 382-event figure covers Events DC venues broadly, not only the Convention Center. 2013 Annual Report

Events DC reported more than $415 million in direct delegate spending for FY2015. The measure is reported for the fiscal year and should not be combined with the FY2012 estimate or the 2005–2008 study total as though they used identical methods. FY15 By the Numbers

The longer historical record therefore contains several different scopes: Convention Center-only event and attendance counts, broader Events DC venue totals, direct delegate spending, hotel room nights, and economic-impact estimates. Keeping those definitions separate is important when comparing Washington, DC convention statistics across years.

Historical Washington convention milestones

The Convention Center opened in 2003. In its first year, it hosted nearly 1 million visitors and generated $426.5 million in delegate spending. By its 10th anniversary in 2013, the venue had hosted nearly 1,800 events and 10 million visitors and residents. Venue History

The venue’s largest sit-down dinner listed in the historical record served 16,206 guests at the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Centennial Boule Dinner in 2009. That number is a single-event milestone, distinct from annual attendance totals. Venue History

The 2014 USA Science & Engineering Festival brought more than 350,000 attendees to the Convention Center. The “more than” wording indicates a lower bound rather than an exact attendance count. Venue History
